How To Choose A Gym

When you make the decision to join the gym, it’s not as simple as signing up to the first one you find. At the end of the day, you’re going to want this to be a place where you feel comfortable and inspired, so putting in a bit of research is vital.

It’s a good idea to ask yourself some key questions when you’re working out how to choose a gym.

How close is the gym?

By making sure that you are in close proximity to your gym, you are ensuring that you can go whenever you feel like it. This also helps to save petrol and time, so you can still go even when you are trying to save some money. Or, if you don’t have a lot of time, it means you’ll still be able to fit a workout into your day.

A gym that’s within walking distance is even better! This avoids the problem of being stuck in traffic and it means you are being even more active. You should definitely consider the distance you have to travel when you’re deciding on how to choose a gym.

What are the opening times of the gym?

For some people, the only time that they can get to the gym is either really early in the morning or last thing at night.

While a lot of gyms are now open 24/7, it is worth checking the opening and closing times. You don’t want to sign up to one, and then realise further down the line that you can’t actually go as much as you’d like because you’re not usually available during the opening times.

What are your fitness goals?

You may be wanting to go to the gym because you’re looking to lose weight, or you want to tone up, or you’re just there because it makes you feel good. Regardless of the reason, you need to consider what’s right for you when choosing your gym.

It may be that there’s a certain type of equipment that you enjoy using - in this case, have a look around the gym first and check how many pieces of this equipment they have. Everyone’s fitness goals are different and we are all looking for different things to make our gym experience more enjoyable.

How comfortable are you in the gym?

Do you mind all of the equipment being in one room? Would you rather be able to go into a separate room to do certain workouts? Consider this when you’re deciding which gym to sign up to.

If space is important to you, maybe you’d rather go to a gym that is situated in a variety of rooms. Whereas, if you’re quite comfortable to be in the same room as everyone else, this isn’t such a big deal. Some gyms now have ‘women’s only’ section to encourage women who may feel uncomfortable exercising in front of men.
